Full dentures

Full dentures are necessary when a patient requires replacement of all of their missing natural teeth. If you are soon to be a full denture wearer, then you will need to have an immediate denture made. An immediate denture is often referred to as a temporary denture. The reason they are referred to as temporary , is because naturally, after a patient has all remaining natural teeth removed it then takes at least 3 months for the gum tissues to heal and resorb back to a ‘natural’ state. At this point, we would either reline your denture or fabricate an entirely new denture. The team at AP Edwards Dental can tailor your denture to suit the image you are after. We can customise teeth by changing shape, shade and alignment to give a more perfect of imperfect appearance.

Partial dentures

Partial dentures can be used to replace the already missing teeth in the mouth and not only serve as a cosmetic replacement but assist the remaining natural teeth by helping to evenly distribute the biting forces, this means the load of force on your natural teeth is less when you have a partial denture. Wearing a partial denture when there are missing teeth, helps to preserve the ‘missing tooth space’. Keeping the ‘missing tooth’ space open, gives you more options in future if you ever choose to replace the tooth with an implant. In doing this, the opposing tooth/teeth are also less likely to ‘over-erupt’.

- Acrylic

Acrylic partial dentures are generally only made as an interim/temporary measure. They are often made to ‘hold the space’ of the missing tooth, again, to allow for the placement of an implant. Acrylic dentures are generally made a lot faster than chrome dentures, not only are there fewer steps involved but often when a patient loses a tooth/teeth (if the patient does not currently wear a denture) then we can make them an acrylic partial to replace these teeth in ‘emergency situations’. This means the patient can wear the appliance without living “toothless” while the denture is being made. Acrylic partial dentures tend to be more fragile or less durable, hence why they are usually only intended to be used as a temporary option.

- Cobalt chrome

Cobalt chrome partial dentures are considered to be the more ‘long term’ option to denture wearing. The alloy-mix metal is cast from a model of your natural dentition. The framework is beautifully handcrafted, made here in our Australian laboratory, unlike some other companies who send their work offshore. The cobalt chrome metal is a lot thinner in thickness and compared to acrylic partials and is far more durable. This type of appliance conducts hot/cold temperatures easily, giving you a better sense of the temperature of food or drink. Partial Cobalt chrome dentures can be added to in future if you lose more teeth. If metal claps are something which puts you off having a partial cobalt chrome, We can offer you an alternative clasping option (in some cases). We have the ability to make these visible metal clasps into ‘tooth coloured’ clasps to give you a more aesthetically pleasing appearance.

Denture repairs

We offer same day denture repairs for most repair cases. Please phone the practice to arrange an appointment as your repair may require an impression.

Denture relines

Denture relines are a very common repair for both partial and full dentures. Naturally, over time, the gums and jaw bone resorb/shrink, leaving your denture feeling loose, prone to lifting or wearing the denture gives your gums/tissues areas of soreness. A reline is required to give the denture a better fit. This process is done by taking an impression of your ridge by using your denture in situ. We then process a new layer of acrylic on the inside of your denture. It may be a number of hours before your denture is ready. Some slight adjusting may be required a few days later as some sore spots may occur. We will ensure we see you approximately 1 week after your reline, for a review visit.
